【明報專訊】科學家發現，由於北極 海冰形成時間延後，一些饑餓的北極熊被迫以幼熊為食物，今年以來，至少已有7宗北極熊獵食幼熊的案例被發現。加拿大環境部退休生物學家斯特林（Ian Stirling）表示，這是他從事科學工作以來，首次見到這麼多北極熊獵食幼熊的案例。他指出，證據顯示，北極熊獵食幼熊，完全是為了食物，而非再交配。
海冰漸薄 不足支撐北極熊
斯特林解釋，哈德遜灣（Hudson Bay）的海冰，以往很早就形成，北極熊可以利用海冰接近海豹，獵食後積聚過冬所需的脂肪，但現在哈德遜灣的海冰形成比以往要晚數周，饑餓的北極熊等不及，只好先吃幼熊。
加拿大另一項最新研究亦稱，作為北極熊家園的北極海冰，以往在夏天通常仍能保存下來，但現在已變得愈來愈薄，部分甚至更是消失掉。研究員稱，一些沒有消融的海冰，其厚度根本不足以支撐北極熊站在其上。專家稱，北極海冰過去長期覆蓋近九成北極盤地，但現在覆蓋面僅及19％；過去通常厚達10米，但現在最多僅2米。
